According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, research shows that omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and may help lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis. Omega-3 fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain and appear to be important for cognitive and behavioral function (brain memory and performance). In fact, infants who do not get enough omega-3 fatty acids from their mothers during pregnancy are at risk for developing vision and nerve problems.

Researchers measured cumulative levels of plasma omega-3s in 2600 older adults at three time points over a 13-year period and found that higher levels of long-chain omega-3s were associated with an 18% lower chance of unhealthy aging.

In particular, essential fatty acids from seafood, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were associated with healthier aging.
