In our modern world, multi-tasking is no longer a skill but a necessity. Most of us run constantly in both the real and virtual realms, maintaining business and personal relationships while juggling the very stringent demands of daily life.
I love discovering new self-motivation techniques for myself and sharing them with my readers because I think we can all use a little nudge now and then. Some days, a big shove!
Watching Your Brain and Achieving Measurable Results
Fascinating new data out of Duke University may have found a new way to motivate you. It happily coincides with many of the mind skills I talk about in Supernoetics.
I absolutely believe in harnessing the power of your mind to accomplish goals you set for yourself, improve your health, and change how you think.
Researchers at Duke used neurofeedback to show participants how focusing on real-time brain activity (while they watched their MRI on-screen) helped them achieve results that weren’t as powerful prior to seeing the visual.
It caused activity in the reward center of the brain (ventral tegmental area or VTA). They were able to inspire measurable change by using their thoughts. After the MRI, they were then able to duplicate the self-motivation technique without the visual display!
The 8-year research was published in the Neuron medical journal. Senior researcher, R. Alison Adcock, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Duke, explained, “These methods show a direct route for manipulating brain networks centrally involved in healthy brain function and daily behavior.”
I’ve mentioned biofeedback many times. There are so many incredible aspects of the brain and you can harness the power of yours! Biofeedback can be used to change your heart rate, lower your body temperature, and help you deal with intense moments of stress or anxiety.
The VTA is responsible for learning, memorization, motivation, and the release of dopamine. By watching which self-motivation techniques worked (taking small breaks between each one), study participants were able to recreate the effect.
“This is the first demonstration of its kind, there is much still to be understood but these tools could offer benefits for everyone, particularly those with depression or attention problems,” Adcock stated.
Unlock Your Brain to Achieve Greatness
The possible application of this technique for students, those suffering from behavioral disorders, or neurodegenerative patients is going to be incredible.
My favorite part is that it isn’t another pill! It’s simply showing people how to use their own mind to help them. That’s more powerful (and effective) than any pill without the side effects.
The unfortunate part is that all of us can’t just pop on down to get a MRI where we can sit for a while and figure out what self-motivation techniques work best. That sort of technology is years in the future before average people can afford it.
For now, if you want a “brain tune-up,” you’re going to have to give it to yourself! I’m here to help you every step of the way! Tell your cynicism to move over because you have a new adventure to explore!
