It’s Not Just Fat; It’s Fat AND Stress

Keith Scott-Mumby

According to a study published in the journal Obesity (Aug 2009), monkeys fed an American diet get fat — but those under chronic stress put on much more belly fat. I did a double take on that. It seems counter-intuitive. Fat is just fat—calories—right? What has stress got to do with it? Well, apparently the […] The post It’s Not Just Fat; It’s Fat AND Stress appeared first on Dr. Keith Scott-Mumby.

What Are Bacteria, Exactly?

Keith Scott-Mumby

Bacteria are single-celled organisms. They come in a variety of shapes: round spheres (called a coccus, plural cocci), rod-shaped (called a bacillus, plural bacilli), spiral- shaped (called a spirochete, plural spirochetes) and a few odd-balls (no plural!)Bacteria are the oldest living organisms on planet Earth. Since they don’t produce “babies” (offspring), but reproduce by just splitting in two, you could say that bacteria represent an original founding organism which is now billions of years old! Respect! Yes. Estimates of how many cells make up a human being vary—between 1 trillion and 100 trillion. I’ve seen both. But what is clear is that there are 10 times more bacteria in you and on you than the actual number of cells that go to make up YOU! Respect? Yes. We humans have about 25,000- 30,000 genes that make up our human-ness. But there are over 100 times more bacterial genes, on you and in you, which all matter. That’s 3 million genes, set against your measly 1%. What happens to your bacteria, happens to you. Trust me. We need lots of respect for those single-cell organisms that are all-but part of us.

Beware Those Bathroom Scales, They Lie!

Keith Scott-Mumby

A recent trip to a doctor to have my ears syringed resulted in a routine weighing on a balance scale—you know, the kind where you are balanced against weights slid along a beam. These are accurate to within 0.5% or less. This is very different to the spring loaded bathroom scales. As metal springs age […]

Can The Evil Food Cartels Ever Be Made Ethical And Still Be Profitable?

Keith Scott-Mumby

You had better hope they can, otherwise you and your loved ones are being killed by a grinding profit machine. Here is the US, business runs criminal and is totally uncontrolled. They can lie, cheat and swindle science as much as they want and they are protected by law. The food industry is just part of that; Big Pharma and the banks are probably the worst. Meanwhile, public officers go after little herb producers and whole food factories. The US, factually, is run on criminal corruption and bribes, not due process of law, and DEFINITELY not the much-vaunted Constitution. As in the old Wild West days, the “law” here is guns. The FDA thinks nothing of bursting into a doctor’s office or a mom and pop food store and throwing everybody against the wall at gunpoint. They have subsumed this power to themselves, which does not exist. It’s illegal. But they find it easier to carry out their perverted control mechanisms (on behalf of the people bribing them), without bothering to use troublesome court procedures, which they have found out they might lose. Now Mark Bittman of the NY Times is asking, could the food industry be persuaded to do it right and still make a profit? No Mark. It couldn’t.

This bone disease kills more women than breast cancer

Keith Scott-Mumby

You may be surprised but in the USA more women die from facture of the neck of femur than die of cancer of the breast, cervix and uterus COMBINED (it is a similar story in other developed countries). A fracture of the femur is dangerous for an elderly man or woman, because it leads to immobility. That in turn increases the risk of pneumonia, which is the usual cause of death in these sad cases. The femur fractures easily in older people because of bone thinning or osteoporosis, which in turn is caused by gross ignorance of nutritional essentials. I have said often that osteoporosis is a whole body disease; it is NOT a lack of calcium. We’re awash with calcium! (calcium is hardening of the arteries, brain plaques, crusty joint and other aging deposits: who needs calcium?) The trouble with aging is that, as we grow older, the calcium ends up in the wrong place. That’s caused by having the faulty nutritional dynamics. Bone is a living tissue, it is built up and broken down constantly. Doctors and drug companies who try to portray bone as a static vessel, filled with a certain amount of calcium—like a full, half-full or quarter-full cup—are  just plain idiots. Your entire skeleton replaces and remodels itself every few months; and I mean every molecule! If you help your bones, by doing it right and feeding them well, they will support you into your ninth, tenth, even twelfth decade.

How to postpone dying

Keith Scott-Mumby

If it needs re-enforcing, here is the main medical message all over again: don’t smoke and live a healthy lifestyle! If you don’t smoke, you’ll live longer and are less likely to die of heart disease and cancer. We all know that (yawn…) But if you are a non-smoker or gave up smoking, a good […]

Vitamin D and Brain Disease

Keith Scott-Mumby

You really CANNOT afford to go short of vitamin D. Remember, it’s silly cheap, so there is no need to skimp. You can get 5,000 IU (plenty for an adult), 240 caps, for under $8 if you Google it! Take only D3, by the way, not the very inferior form of D2. Vitamin D2 was the first synthetic form of Vitamin D. Vegans use it.  D2 can be used to fortify foods, it’s in some vitamin D supplements and is the type put in all vitamin prescriptions. Therefore, don’t bother your doctor for a script. You’ll get junk nutrition. Vitamin D insufficiency has been associated with a variety of clinical disorders and chronic diseases, including impaired balance, decreased muscle strength, mood and cognitive dysfunction, autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis and diabetes (types 1 and 2), and certain forms of cancer. Woa! This goes way beyond preventing rickets! It even goes beyond vitamin D as an immune stimulator.
