Yet another “I Told ‘Em!” (30 years ago). This is starting to get embarrassing. You all know my pivotal place in the history of food allergies and bringing them to public attention. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) was one of the easiest things to solve. Just stop eating the allergy foods! Now scientists have “discovered” that if you restrict peoples’ diet, the IBS is much better (if they had done it exactly the way I describe in my Diet Wise book, it would have disappeared altogether!) Their plan was to have patients avoid some fancy sugars. It’s called the FODMAP diet (fermentable, oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols). These sugars are found in wheat, rye, onion, garlic, leeks, artichokes, mushrooms, cauliflower, snow peas, beans, chickpeas, lentils, milk products except hard cheese, honey, apples, pears, watermelon, mangos, stone fruits, high-fructose corn syrup, sorbitol, mannitol, maltitol, and xylitol. And more. 

The labeling of this age has run the gamut from the ‘Space Age’ to the ‘Age of Aquarius’ to the age of ‘Sexual Revolution’. However, the one epithet that probably fits more accurately than all the rest is the ‘Age of Anxiety’. Anxiety is the one negative force that cuts through all levels of society affecting the rich and poor, young and old alike. Anxieties and tensions are insidious forces which exist below the surface of your awareness, smoldering and building up, until you reach a ‘breaking point’ and explode in a fit of anger or a violent argument, or some other unreasoned behavior. It also manifests in over-indulgence in food, alcohol, cigarettes, sex or work, in headaches, fatigue, impotence, clumsiness, sleepless nights, or any number of physical ailments. Conscious worry and fear also enter the picture to compound the feeling of frustration already being experienced because you are not able to identify the source of the unconscious anxiety and thus eliminate it. Consequently, if you are like most people, you will gulp down a handful of pills to alleviate that dull aching feeling, or your ‘escape’ will be in the form of the after-work booze-up. Or you’ll change your job, or get a divorce, or move to another town, or some psychologist will tell you to ‘adjust’ to your problems. Or you will grin and bear it because your religious leader piously proclaims that sorrow is this life’s just reward, and so on.

The people who make high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) haven’t let up in their TV advertising. They’re still out there claiming their chemically produced concoction is the same as natural sugar. The corn it’s made from isn’t even “natural” any more. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 86% of all corn grown in America is genetically engineered.1 The enzymes needed to make the high fructose corn syrup are also genetically modified. And this enzyme application is an extra processing step that even refined sugar doesn’t go through. Another extra step used to make high fructose corn syrup is to use caustic soda in the processing. Problem is, this stuff can get contaminated with mercury.

But did you realize he has joined with an international terrorism movement? Bill Gates has put up another $1 billion to be sure that everyone in the world gets all the main vaccines available, even if they do not want them. He doesn’t give a damn if you have your own point of view. HIS word is what counts. He’s a bully (and a fool). He wants every child on the planet vaccinated. (Note: Gates is not even a doctor, but just some guy who dropped out of college and made a bunch of cash with his crappy software via pushy business practices). Individual choice and the sanctity of parenthood mean nothing to Emperor Gates. He wants you vaccinated and they have a plan for those who refuse… Shoot ‘em! And that’s precisely where it’s going. Gangs of armed thugs, backed by Gates, are roaming the streets in some countries, forcing terrorized parents to get their children vaccinated.

But the problem is far from a European one. The whole world is gradually being drawn into the nightmare of no more effective antibiotics. Reports are increasing across the world, of patients with infections that are nearly impossible to treat. The European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) said yesterday that in some countries up to 50 per cent of cases of blood poisoning caused by one bug – K. pneumoniae, a common cause of urinary and respiratory conditions – were resistant to carbapenems, the most powerful class of antibiotics. The percentage of carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae has doubled from 7 per cent to 15 per cent. The ECDC said it is “particularly worrying” because carbapenems are the last-line antibiotics for treatment of multi-drug-resistant infections. Marc Sprenger, the director, said: “The situation is critical. We need to declare a war against these bacteria.” Tough words Marc. Trouble is, it comes out a bit hollow: declaring war when you’re out of bullets and shells!

You won’t need telling what probiotics are. But it is always helpful to be reminded how powerful they can be. Hippocrates said “all diseases begin in the gut.” He was not wrong. We now know that inflammation from the intestinal tract is a major factor in almost all ill health. We also know that inflammation is probably the number one aging factor. Forget telomeres: they can be rebuilt (good science on that). But inflammation damages and ages tissues rapidly and permanently. Think of arthritis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). These are all inflammatory diseases. Even cancer has an inflammatory element. These are also the diseases typical of aging. So anything which helps quench inflammation is a good thing, right? Back to the probiotics story…

Important and Totally New Model For Aging This study came out of left field. There are many models of aging, such as the oxidative stress theory, loss of telomeres, mitochondrial aging and stress. Now, it seems, scientists have discovered that aged or “senescent” cells hanging around in healthy tissues can cause surrounding normal cells to slow down and prematurely age. Senescent cells start to accumulate and produce “age” proteins and other factors that basically make the healthy neighboring cells that surround them less functional. It’s like a bad mob influence in the neighborhood, spoiling it for all the good guys! This is not a model of aging I have heard before. But it is promising because animal studies showed that if we sweep away the aged cells, the animals lived longer and were far more energetic. The study was conducted by Mayo Clinic scientists in Rochester, Minnesota, and published online Nov. 2 in the prestigious journal Nature. After “deleting” senescent cells in mice genetically engineered to age quickly, tissues remained healthier and performed better. These tired old cells make up only 15% of cells in an elderly person. To eliminate them in the mice, the researchers focused a tracer on a gene called p16, which stops cells from dividing youthfully. This gene does not express itself in youth but tends to become active in later years. Again, there is the question: does it become active because of aging or does aging occur because it becomes active?
