A Really Useful Vaccine

Keith Scott-Mumby

Well, potentially. It’s a vaccine designed to immunize a person against the “high” that is induced by heroin. Taking the drug will no longer help the addict get their accustomed thrill and so, it is hoped, he or she will quit the habit relatively easily. See, vaccines work; not all—but you’d think when reading the tirades by ignorant and medically untrained fools on the Internet that all vaccines were evil and didn’t work any way. I’ve said many times that I am happy there is a rabies vaccine, while living in the world. For its development Louis Pasteur deserves credit and acclaim for all time. Those who rant against his supposed cupidity are themselves twisted, jealous and big time liars.

Gonorrhea back on the rampage

Keith Scott-Mumby

Those of us who are older are less likely than the kids to screw around today, let’s face it. Constancy has several rewards but health safety is not the least of them. You can DIE from casual sex encounters! Trouble is, many STDs are getting antibiotic resistant. There’s a strain of deadly, untreatable syphilis out there. That’s bad news. Now gonorrhea. True, gonorrhea isn’t likely to kill you—but it does make a mess of the plumbing and tackle “down there”. The CDC is warning that gonorrhea is growing resistant to all known antibiotic. The same is true in the rest of the developed world. We could be back in the dark ages soon, as far as STDs are concerned.

Ticks babesiosis

Keith Scott-Mumby

My wife just LOVES deer. Me, I’m not so sure. They are gentle and lovely. But deer also carry ticks, which are a big problem. You probably thought I meant Lyme disease there, didn’tcha? Well no, I mean something far deadlier. Deer ticks also carry babesiosis. It’s one of the parasites diseases I covered in […]

Lethal Virus Jumps To Humans Scare

Keith Scott-Mumby

We shouldn’t be concerned about a lethal virus that jumped species, we are told. Why ever not? It’s a terrifying thought. A virus that can do that poses no real threat, said a spokesperson. Well, that guy is a fool or a liar. If a virus can jump from one species to another (we’ll come to the details in a moment), then nobody is safe and the idea that there is “no threat” is stupid beyond measure. In fact it’s deliberate disinformation. Presumably the authorities or boffins think that people are too stupid to be told the truth. Or the authorities are too stupid to TELL the truth? What got me started on this is a new report on a 2009 outbreak of lethal monkey virus that took place at the University of California, Davis. The virus jumped to a new species—the New World titi monkey—and wiped out over 80% of them. This particular virus did also happen to infect humans but was actually non-fatal. So “no cause to worry”? Only if you like the idea of jumping out of an aeroplane at 10,000 feet without using a parachute!

Do Allergies Protect Against Cancer?

Keith Scott-Mumby

One of the things I speculated about, with colleagues, back in the 1980s, was whether allergies may protect against cancer. These were the heady days when I was first declared the world’s “Number One Allergy Detective” (Sunday Mail, 1990). We were dealing with a jumpy, overactive immune system, that’s for sure. Allergies are caused when […]

How Long Should Sex Last?

Keith Scott-Mumby

I came across a survey which purported to set the record straight about how long heterosexual intercourse should last. You listen to some guys boast and you’d think it was an all-nighter. Whereas the woman often asks “Have you started yet?” when if fact it’s all over! The verdict from men and women sex therapists […]

Chromium and confusion

Keith Scott-Mumby

You may have noticed that confusion and conflict start to show, when even expert writers are talking about chromium. That’s a sure sign that knowledge is not really concrete. Dr. Al Sears, for example, a writer I admire, is telling us in one newsletter we can get chromium from beef (true) and then a couple weeks later is telling us their isn’t much chromium in beef and grains (also true). Chromium made pigs lean he said. One study took commercial pigs and fed them chromium, and measured significant fat reduction. Researchers changed nothing else about the pigs … all they did was give them chromium and they got leaner (less fat) and gained muscle. 1 Another study at the University of Kentucky found much the same thing. They added chromium to the diet of pigs and got an “increased percentage of muscle and decreased percentage of fat.”2  But then other quality websites swing the opposite way. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, at Oregon State University, studies show that chromium is of little use in losing weight. The studies they quote clearly showed that; but were they holding back on the studies that DID show chromium helps lose weight?
