A few months ago, I did a serious piece with a jokey title: if you’ve got cancer, take an aspirin. A study published online August 10, 2012, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, also showed that aspirin puts the brake on cancers. We are not talking chemo-strength, or 100% protection, understand, but there is a measurable effect. The study was prompted because an analysis pooling results from existing randomized trials of daily aspirin (for heart and circulation benefits) found an estimated 37% reduction in cancer mortality among those using aspirin for 5 years or more [Lancet. 2012;379:1602–1612].

Where else, I wonder, could a 15 year old kid come up with a successful $3 screening test for deadly pancreatic cancer and get it patented? Because that’s what happened…. Jack Andraka, a pupil at a Maryland high school student, came up with a quick basic dip-stick sensor test, using simple diabetic test paper and a $50 meter from Home Depot. He focused specifically on early-stage pancreatic cancer after losing an uncle to the disease.

We are accustomed to the convenient (and lucrative) massaging of statistics that goes on around cancer. The public relations “war” is all about impressing the public and channeling them into the dollars machine, with fear and dread of cancer. Even so, it was quite startling to read that, since the PSA test has been discredited and not used too much, the “incidence” of early stage prostate cancer in older men has plummeted by 25%. See if you follow my reasoning, which is:  there are fewer fake cancers being funneled into the system? That’s pretty shocking. It follows on my repeated advice, which is stay away from doctors. What they call “screening”, fishermen would call casting their nets wider.

For the twentieth time or more, I repeat: there are some great doctors out there, trying hard. Not everyone is corrupted by Big Pharma. Now even the FDA is playing ball with them! I’m talking now about a novel combination of vitamin C and vitamin K3 called Apatone. It selectively targets tumors by entering cancer cells as readily as glucose. It then suppresses certain inflammatory reactions that cancer cells use to escape destruction by chemotherapy agents. When administered prior to chemo, vitamin K3 appears to decrease the resistance to chemo drugs. It has helped prostate cancer patients, who were getting no help from chemo, to start making progress knocking out the cancer. That’s vitamin C and vitamin K3 at work. According to Science News, “This non-toxic approach weakens and kills cancers in a novel way.”1 In fact quite a few studies published since 2008 have shown vitamins K2 and K3 to be intriguing agents in both cancer prevention and treatment. In a March 2008 study, Apatone significantly slowed the cancer; 16 our of 17 patients responded positively (no chemo agent can equal that!) Moreover, of the 15 patients who continued to take it, only one death occurred after 14 months of treatment. The doses were: 5,000 mg of vitamin C and 50 mg of vitamin K3. The doctors concluded that Apatone showed promise in delaying biochemical progression in this group of end stage prostate cancer patients.2

Hiding from the sun protects you from skin cancer is another of those stupid persistent and downright deadly myths that just goes on forever; not because it’s true but because doctors are too stupid to too timid to stand up to it. Creating and fuelling the fear is what the personal health care industry thrives on. Yes, skin cancers are on the rise. But is the sun getting bigger? Hotter? Nearer?
