I’m not against vaccination, as regular readers will know. I’m just against useless and dangerous vaccination. Even dangerous vaccines, such as that for rabies, have a place, where the disease is hideous and the protection worth the risk. Hardly a deadly disease in fit children. The worrisome complication is orchitis (inflamed testicles), which can lead to male sterility. Then, the vaccine isn’t notorious (like measles, pertussis and flu). But what’s the point if it doesn’t work? A recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) reveals that a large proportion of children affected by a mumps outbreak in 2009 had already been vaccinated for the condition in accordance with recommended government guidelines.
